Are you 12 years old or over? If you fish for salmon, trout, freshwater fish or eels in England and Wales and the Border Esk catchment in Scotland, you must have an Environment Agency Rod Licence before you go fishing. Children under 12 years of age do not require a licence.
A fishing licence entitles you to use a rod and line to fish provided you follow the rules and byelaws in force. A fishing licence does not give you permission to fish in a particular venue. You must have the permission of the fishery owner before you can fish. There is often a charge for this.
