Location - as per a traditional pool, but a quieter location has obvious advantages and power shouldn't be an issue. A key consideration is the nature of the surrounding garden - unmown, meadow grass; shrubs and smaller trees are recommended to attract insects and provide birds and amphibians with safe access to the pool.
Size - no real limites but a larger pool volume would be preferable.
Design - best suited to an informal style which blends in the its surroundings. A raised feature would limit access and should be avoided.
Filtration - in the long term this shouldn't be required. Pumps can be installed to operate a fountain, stream or waterfall, but avoid turning over the pond more than once every few hours, and consider how these will fit into the style of the pond.
Fish - strickly speaking, fish should be avoided as any fish will have a negative influence on wildlife. Ultimately keep stocks low, and fish such as goldfish or rudd are preferable to carp or orfe.
Recommended lining materials - the requirements for beach areas and possibly planting pockets make a flexible liner ideal.
